Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Bitcoin Cash launched in August 2017, after branching off from Bitcoin through what is known as a hard fork. The split came out of a long-running debate about how to help the network handle more users. Bitcoin Cash’s answer was to increase the block size, which is the amount of transaction data each block can hold. A larger block size lets the network process more transactions at once, which helps keep payments quick to send and low in cost, even during busier periods. Like Bitcoin, its total supply is capped at 21 million coins.
Litecoin (LTC)
Litecoin launched in 2011, created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee, which makes it one of the earliest altcoins still in use. It was designed as a faster, lighter alternative to Bitcoin. Litecoin produces a new block roughly every 2.5 minutes, about four times faster than Bitcoin, which means transactions are typically confirmed more quickly. It also uses a different mining algorithm called Scrypt, and its total supply is capped at 84 million coins, four times that of Bitcoin. This focus on speed and low cost is why it is often associated with everyday payments. Having operated for over a decade, it is also among the more established names in the space.
